Are they in any way related to Christian rosaries and Muslim prayer beads?
In essence, the tzit-tzit remind us of all 613 commandments in the Torah. The 5 knots on the tzit-tzit also remind us of our Five senses, and the 5 books of the Torah.
It's actually interesting that the Shulchan Aruch [Code of Jewish law] saws that one must be extremely scrupulous when it comes to the laws of tzit tzit because with fulfilling this commandment, you fulfill all the rest as it says,
"And they shall be tzitzit for you, and when you look at them you will remember all of the Lord's commandments and do them and not follow after your heart and after your eyes which lead you astray." Numbers 15:39.
So it's a very strong Mitzvah.
